The first thing Google does after each and every one of its acquisitions is turn a fee service off and make it free".

IBM spreekt over derde generatie technologie (eerste: keyword matches; tweede: Google-technologie: algorithmic search).

The status of Video Search (apart from image search options from Yahoo!, Google and MSN):
  • IBM's project, code-named Marvel
  • Singingfish (part of AOL): works on a solution from November 2003, and was bought by AOL subsequently in 2004
  • Yahoo! Video Search: beta version Dec 15, 2004
  • Blinkx: beta version Dec 16, 04
  • Google: planned for 2005
  • MSN: ???
These search engines fill their databases indexing either phonemes from the audio file (Blinkx), the video file (Singingfish) or both (Yahoo!).

Nearing the year's end, we could start asking: what was the stupidest things we've seen.

Let me just kick off this cycle.

KPN/Digitenne not bidding for soccer rights in the Netherlands.
Quite the usual thing to do when you are launching a new platform.
No matter how interim KPN's TV-strategy is, this is really unforgivable.
The money would have been no item whatsoever.

Post items at the below envolop.

A short overview of market dynamics in the games business:

Here's a post on the Dutch newspaper market. It's in Dutch, but the obvious conclusions are:
  • shrinking industry, somewhat dissappointing yield, interesting but smaal opportunities for growth
  • very cyclical, investing in it requires good timing
  • internet is the big threat

Some observations:

Management shake-ups abound:
  • France Telecom: CEO Thierry Breton is rumoured to be leaving to be FinMin
  • BT: BT Retail chief Pierre Danon will be CEO at Capgemini
  • Walt Disney: News Corp President has a new contract, allowing him to switch over without much hassle to succees Michael Eisner as CEO

The music industry turned to a new strategy in combatting the P2P downloading industry: P2P downloading!

Recent strategies include:
  • partnering with firms ranging from Apple (iTunes) to Wal-Mart, offering legal download sites
  • suing thousands of individuals in John Doe cases
  • uploading corrupted files to P2P sites
  • the ‘Inducing Infringement of Copyrights’ Act (anyone who induces others to reproduce copyrighted material; investors, advisers, reviewers, nonprofits excluded), hasn't passed yet
Legal P2P download initiatives:
  • Grokster teamed with Mercora in order to offer streaming 'radio', based on tracks at members' computers; pays royalties; is in talks with Sony BMG
  • Wurld Media will launch 'Peer Impact' early 2005, a legal P2P site, will charge 99 cents/track
  • BT and Blueprint (DRM software) supposedly have a similar idea
  • Snocap provides technology and the Universal Music catalogue (150,000 tracks) for legal P2P file-sharing plans to Shawn Fanning (Napster founder) and Mashboxx (launches early 2005 and currently talks to Sony BMG as well)

This week grought a number of firms putting themselves up for sale:
  • Movie firm Lions Gate Entertainment, worth up to $1.8bn
  • Newspaper publisher Pulitzer, valued at $1.2bn
And several deals have closed, or will do so in the next few months:
  • The Adelphia auction is still running
  • The Grey-takeover by WPP was delayed
  • Sony bought MGM
  • Dow Jones acquired MarketWatch.com
So what does this mean?

Versatel: pizza versus Big Brother

John de Mol's investment firm Talpa increased its holding of Versatel shares to just over 25%. John de Mol earned EUR 2bn selling Endemol, creator of the Big Brother hit tv reality series, to Telefonica.

Leopoldo Fernandez Pujals took an almost 25% share of Jazztel in September (through a capital increase) and assumed the Chairman title. Pujals made millions from his Telepizza firm.

Pujals designed a very ambitious growth plan for Jazztel, growing revenues fivefolf in three years time.

Leaves the question: will the Big Brother creator getr entangled in Versatel? The company by the way sees room for cooperation ...

IPTV: comparing Akimbo Systems and DaveTV
Internet-to-tv download systems
To be sure: other systems include TiVo/Netflix, Starz/RealNetworks, CinemaNow, Movielink, RipeTV, TimeshiftTV (Broadband Networks), MovieBeam (Disney), SBC/EchoStar, Verizon/DirecTV, Blockbuster.com, Microsoft Media Center, etc.
  • Akimbo was launched in October, Dave is introduced November 15
  • The Akimbo service requires a $230 box (80 GB hard drive), Dave's software is available for free download (Dave will introduce a box next year)
  • Akimbo charges 10 $/mo (or $200 for lifetime) plus some premium channels and PpV, DaveTV only uses the PpV model
  • Both services supply an EPG
  • Akimbo is ad-free, Dave uses targeted ads
  • As to content: Akimbo specifically targets niche content and signed up 60 providers so far, Dave also aims at the large video music market; in due course both aspire to offer regular Hollywood content; Akimbo has a trial with TBS for CNN, TCM, Cartoon Network, etc. content

Communications Breakdown

TV-over-Wireless

After Texas Instruments' new HDTV chip and Qualcomm's $800m network initiative, Nokia announces a tv enabled handset for 2006. A trial in Berlin involved asking participators how much the service would be worth, and supposedly people are willing to pay an astounding 13 EUR/mo.
Currently trials are running in Helsinki and Oxford. The US will join, in cooperation with Crown Castle. Nokia wants to use the DVB-H standard.

Convergence and fiber divergence

At a Gartner conference Deutsche Telekom presented its view of protecting fixed network revenues: simply get everybody to subscribe to DSL. BT Group on the other hand gambles on convergence: fixed/mobile, mobile/WiFi.
In a different way, IT-services also provide for growth opportunities. This is an area where DT and BT agree. T-Systems and BT Global must show the way.

Obviously, BT is motivated by their sale of the Celnet mobile business.

A comparible issue is the fiber disagreement. Verizon is rapidly building FTTP, whereas SBC goes no further than FTTN. Verizon is willing to spin-off up to 25% of access lines in order to be more efficient about the fiber investments. BellSouth is critical and Sprint questions those investments altogether. Now NTT is stepping into the game and supposedly is ready to commit EUR 40bn through 2010 to upgrade 30m homes and businesses.

Obviously, Verizon and NTT are motivated by the fiercest of competitors, Comcast and Softbank (Yahoo BB).

Advertising inventory is under attack from two sides:
Internet: links drives up prices
TV: time-shifted watching (through VDRs) reduces the 30s-commercials market

Inventory on the other hand is growing:
Video games:
  • in-game advertising, as a form of product placement that has already emerged form infancy stages. Both Massive and inGamePartners provide services. Nielsen Entertainment trials a metering service in cooperation with Activision (for inventory) and Chrysler (for displaying the Jeep brand).
TV:
Internet:
  • Extending the reach through Google SMS (search from mobile handsets).
  • Google Desktop (increase inventory to include PC hard drives) and Enterprise Search (to include intranets).
  • Personalisation (such as MyYahoo!) en localisation (Yahoo! Local, Google Local) to drive the value.
  • Also: an enhanced search experience. Specifically: MSN will debut a new search engine within the next few months, Vivisimo introduced Clusty and Idealab launched Snap.com. Google, Yahoo! and Ask Jeeves continuously improve their search engines.
  • Extending search databases by including books & magazines (Google Print, Amazon Search Inside the Book) and science (HighBeam).
  • Advertsing in e-mail (e.g. Google's Gmail) and along web logs (Google's Blogger service).
There does not seem to be a shortage of inventory, but to tap all the above requires capex and willingness to take risks.

Let's look at the various options in MOVIE DELIVERY.

Distinguish between:
  • Theatrical, physical (DVD) and electronic/online delivery
  • Push (braodcast) versus pull/on-demand
  • Ordering (online) versus delivery (mail, download)
  • Buy/own versus rent
  • Legal versus illegal (DRM)
  • Also: Hollywood's release schedule: 1. Theater. 2. Home video. 3. Rental, PpV, (S)VoD, internet. 4. PayTV, premium channels. 5. Broadcast.
Considerations:
  • Consumer centric view: watch whenever, wherever, using any device
  • Hollywood view: hype theatrical releases, maximize DVD sales, limit piracy and P2P downloads
  • Service provider view (cable, telco, ISP): maximize VoD
Overview:
  • 1. View live: Theater, airplane, boat
  • 2a. Buy DVD: Blockbuster, Amazon.com, Wal-Mart
  • 2b. Download to own: P2P file sharing
  • 3a. Rent DVD: Blockbuster, slef-destruct DVD (Disney)
  • 3a. Rent DVD, ordering through internet: Netflix, Walmart.com, Blockbuster.com

Search has taken a few turns lately:

www.sensis.com.au owned by Telstra:
Yellow pages site: localised search by crawling the web but also citysearch.com.au, whereis.com.au, yellowpages.com.au and whitepages.com.au.

www.ask.com owned by Ask Jeeves:
Save results, limit the number of sites to be searched. No registration required. Desktop search to be released this month (Tukaroo was bought in June).

www.a9.com owned by Amazon.com:
Personalisation by allowing results to be saved. Results from Google (web and images), Amazon (Search inside the book), IMDb (Amazon), GuruNet.com (reference) and also from a user's history, bookmarks and diary. The 'Discover' feature suggests pages based on one's history. Also: registered users receive a 1.57% (or half pi) discount on Amazon. Google AdWords supplies ads.

www.furl.net acquired by LookSmart:
Save search results, that can later be searched and shared.

www.clusty.com owned by Vivisimo:
Meta search, clustering results, tabbing sources. Also localalised search. The 'details' link reveals the searched databases. Using the 'preview' (magnifying glass) link the result is displayed within the results page.

Most scientists seam to agree with Amazon's Udi Manber: "We're in the Wright brothers phase of search technology." Not everybody agrees showever.
