Electriciteitsnet binnen, WiFi buiten

Telecom Ottawa, een afsplitsing van nutsbedrijf Hydro Ottawa, heeft een interessante visie op breedband (overigens data-only: nog geen VoIP dienst).

Economische motieven zorgden voor de volgende keuze:
  • Indoor leggen zij Broadband over Powerline (BPL) netwerken aan. Bijvoorbeeld in hotel Ramada Inn in Cornwall (Canada). Deze maken gebruik van het electriciteitsnetwerk. Daardoor is internet toegankelijk overal waar een stopcontact voorhanden is.
  • Outdoor, zoals in het Nepean Sportsplex (Ottawa) en het stadscentrum van Ottawa, bouwt Telecom Ottawa WiFi netwerken. (Daarbij gebruikt het overigens mesh technologie van BelAir Networks.)

Interesting and brief teaser. I've never heard of BPL but if it does exist, how does it work? Is it the same concept as ADSL? More information would be appreciated, thank you.
